Burleigh Skin Nurse - Thermage FAQs

What is Thermage?

Thermage is a radiofrequency treatment for skin tightening.

What does Thermage do?

It tightens and lifts the skin. It doesn't reduce fat. It is best used in your 30s through to your early 50s depending on how much sun damage you have but like all treatments, prevention is better than cure so the earlier you start, the better success you will have in keeping your skin tight and firm, sitting up where it should be.

Where is Thermage typically used?

The advantage of a radiofrequency machine against others is that Thermage can be used on any part of the body. You can use it around the eyes when it starts to get a little droopy. You can use it on your face, around your marionette area, on your jaw line, your chin, underneath your chin. Your neck when it gets that very thin turkey-neck-type look to it; all the typical facial places. It can also be used on the body.

A great example is after having children and you have lost all the gained weight; you’ve firmed up but the skin doesn't sit well; you may also have excess skin in around your belly button so your belly button doesn't sit properly. If you have had a caesarean you may have excess skin hanging over the caesarean scar; Thermage is perfect for tightening up all of that.

Thermage can also be used on other parts of the body; it is excellent for tightening up your skin on your tuck-shop-lady arms,or over your knees. Some people dislike the excess skin hanging over the top of your knees or over your elbows and Thermage allows you to tighten that up. Another area is around your back side, to help lift up all your skin.

When you look at the images of Thermage treatment, it looks like a cellulite treatment but it is not just firming the skin.  Thermage is holding everything inside in a better position. It does look like you are losing fat and working on cellulite but in reality, what you are doing is you are creating a younger skin so that it is holding everything in place like it did when your skin was younger.

What should I expect during Thermage treatment – What equipment is used?

The machine itself is quite small. It is tall and thin with a hand piece to hold, connected by a hose.  There is a changeable tip or end-piece that we add on to the hose depending on the delivery and the individual client’s needs. For Thermage that end-piece is different for each area that you do; the piece you use for the eyes is a small piece, the piece around your face, neck and décolletage is of medium size and you can use that same size piece on smaller areas of your body and potentially on your belly, depending on the level of skin laxity, and then there is a body one as well. The equipment used is tailored to what the client is trying to achieve and what their desired result is.

What is the science behind Thermage?

Thermage has been in the market for 12 years and when it first came out, although it was well received, it did get a lot of bad reviews due to its pain level which is very different now.

Thermage works through creating heat on the deeper layers of the skin which breaks down the collagen initially, which then makes the collagen stimulate and reform in a nice, even way, which gives the skin its tightening.

Over the years, there have been many changes technological advances and the latest device is called CPT and this is what we have at Skin Matters.  CPT has two different aspects in the tip that offsetsthe body’s pain. It is a spherical diode which is well known in medicinein that it sends multiple messages to the brain at the same time.  The multiple messages confuse your brain and in doing so, redirects the pain you feel.  As a result, instead of pain, with CPT you will first get a warm sensation and less discomfort.  CPT uses vibration and Cryo; the Cryo sends a cooling message and the vibration confuses the nerve endings and helps to offset the heat.  Because we are nurses and understand where the nerves are in sensitive places, we dial the treatment down, over those places.  It is our goal to make our clients as comfortable as possible during their treatment.

How long does a Thermage treatment last?

Thermage is one treatment that lasts for up to two years. To demonstrate the outcome of that treatment, I will use the stomach as an example because you have more weight in it. In the stomach, we have a layer of fat tissue, and that layer has more weight in it compared to your neck or décolletage. Because of that weight, it takes a period of time to work, because we are working at the cellular level. Anything that works on a cellular level takes time. For your stomach, you will start seeing results 2 to 3 months or up to 6 months after the treatment, then it starts to plateau.

After 2 months you will start to see the building of collagen and gradually seeing the change. It is like  when you start to lose weight, you look at yourself and you can't see a difference but other people look at you and go wow, you've lost so much weight. Thermage is exactly the same concept; the ones that really works, take time.

If you are looking after yourself really well and you are holistically anti-aging yourself, your collagen degradation intrinsically is not too fast. If you are smoking, drinking a lot, not exercising and not eating well your collagen degradation will be faster and your results will not last as long as if you were looking after yourself.  Thermage themselves recommend anywhere between 12 months to two years for top up treatments.

How long will aThermagetreatment take?

You will be in the clinic for approximately an hour and half.

What is the cost for a Thermage treatment?

For a larger area, it is $2,995.  That price would be for your neck and décolletage or a body area.  This is the step above fillers and before surgery.  It is not a tummy tuck but it is the step before that. For a smaller area such as an eye treatment, it is $1,495.

Is there a payment plan?

We have partnered with a company called Zip Money, which provides medical loans for up to $15,000 to support our client’s needs.  Please let us know if you would like a referral.

What preparation is required?

We are treating underneath the skin with Thermageso there is no preparation to the skin required.  We simply clean off any make-up and then afterwards, you can put your make-up back on and go back to work.

I do recommend taking one or a half of Panadol, depending on your pain threshold.

Who are the celebrities that endorse Thermage?

Gwyneth Paltrow has been vocal about the results of Thermage, though she used the earlier models so she will mention that it was quite uncomfortable.  Gwyneth has stated that her results were significant and she felt that she took 5 years off her face.

Kim Kardashian mentioned recently that she used Thermage on her stomach because of how her pregnancy affected her belly button, which is really common.  I have also read articles that mention Nicole Kidman and Madonna.
